You Have Won Your Battle

11 Jan

Have you ever stopped to think about the battles that take place around the world?  The newspaper always has updates on various battles that are taking place around the world and the casualties of these wars.  But what about the battles that take place in the spiritual world? “For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places” Ephesians 6:12

I am writing to you who are God’s children
because your sins have been forgiven through Jesus.
I am writing to you who are mature in the faith
because you know Christ, who existed from the beginning.
I am writing to you who are young in the faith
because you have won your battle with the evil one.
I have written to you who are God’s children
because you know the Father.
I have written to you who are mature in the faith
because you know Christ, who existed from the beginning.
I have written to you who are young in the faith
because you are strong.
God’s word lives in your hearts,
and you have won your battle with the evil one. 1 John 2:12-14

Do Not Love This World
Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever. 1 John 2:15-17

Last night, as I read 1 John 2, I was struck by the significance of the words, “You have won your battle with the evil one.”  Once we accept Jesus as our Savior, the battle has been won. Satan is defeated by  Jesus’ death on the cross. He saved us from the shackles of sin, from death.  Once the battle is won, death no longer has a hold on us because we will have eternal life.  Our hearts are filled with the holy spirit and our eyes can be fixed on Heaven, not on this world.  Jesus brings hope and peace into our lives. Praise God!!

There is a place where the believer enters into a certain confidence. Much like any complicated task, we find our experience with Jesus becomes a sort of accomplishment. I’d guess that’s what they mean when they refer to “mature”.

But I’m struck as to how I got here. The best way to describe it is to remember those who failed to attain the “rest” of God: ” . . . For 40 years they saw what I did . . .” We gain our standing by patient perseverance.

In all things Jesus and the power of His working in His people.

    By His Grace.

It is by remembering those who haven’t attained “the rest of God” that we can put in perspective our own journey. I sometimes wonder how to know if I am what John was referring to as “mature in the faith” or “young in the faith.”

Thank you for sharing! God bless you!

Pondering the question of maturity. Perhaps it comes upon us without notice. Much like becoming a woman instead of a girl, or a man instead of a boy. No one really knows where that line is drawn. Does any mom or dad really see themselves as “mature”? Aren’t we all little kids till we’re too old to remember anything?

But one thing is sure. I noticed a marked increase in expectation from the Lord regarding my walk. Maybe that subject was in the mind of James when he warned that not many of us should desire to be teachers. In the end, only He knows.

    By His Grace.
